A MESSAGE FROM THE CEO

Dear Friends,

As we stand at the brink of entering our 40th year of service in 2014, I take a moment to reflect on the journey AHS has taken since our founding in 1974. More than anything else, our journey has been one of growing in response to the needs of the community we serve. Many people made it their life's work to take AHS from a one-room clinic staffed by volunteers to who we are today: a leading community health center with a national reputation where more than 350 staff members serve over 24,000 patients annually.

The journey is far from over. With the impending start of President Obama's health care reform in 2014, we anticipate many more patients seeking care at our clinics and we are rising to the challenge. We embarked on our largest capital project in the history of AHS, an $11 million new clinic located in the heart of Oakland Chinatown (the site of the former Silver Dragon restaurant). We are actively recruiting physicians at the top medical schools nationwide. We are investing in our physical infrastructure and our clinicians so that we may continue our journey of growing in response to the needs of our community.

At the center of our journey are our patients. They are the reason AHS was founded 39 years ago, they are the reason we exist today. In this Annual Report, we spotlight two patients, Jenny Phuong Le and Yue Ying Liang. They are special individuals with unique stories. They are also representatives of the community we serve. We honor our patients for we learn from them every day. They bestow upon us the gift of their humanity.

This Annual Report is dedicated to our patients.
